CHAPTER 12

JACKSON

I step out in the living room the next morning excited to see Kamilla again. Yesterday turned out to be the perfect day, and I was in a much lighter spirit with all the lies off my chest. There’d been a nagging need to ask Kamilla to spend the night in my bed, but I knew from all the conflicting emotions that had been swimming in my head that wouldn’t have ended well for me. Especially seeing we agreed to no emotions, and no commitments. I’d much rather have her in my life and bed casually than not at all.

Kamilla stands next to the living room table, her dark brown hair pulled back into a neat ponytail, and her expression focused.

"Hey, you, how about we try something different today," she suggests, her gaze flicking between me and the assortment of therapy balls on the table. "I think we need to spice things up a bit."

"Spice things up?" I raise an eyebrow, curious about what she has in mind.

"Yeah, I want to evaluate your progress and see how strong your joints are outside of the adrenaline of our extra curricular activities.” Kamilla says, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Okay,” I say, with a wide smile. “What did you have in mind.”

"How about a little competition?” I ask. “We'll each balance on one foot while holding six therapy balls. The goal is to see who drops fewer balls during the session. First to drop all their balls or drop their foot loses. We can do best of two. Think you can handle that?"

"Is that a challenge, Ms. Morallez?" I ask, teasing.

"Absolutely," she replies, smirking.

"Then you're on," I say, determined not to let her outdo me. “But how about we sweeten the deal?”

She raises an eyebrow, and I grin. “How about whoever loses has to buy the other one dinner.”

I thought about biting the bullet and asking her on a real date the whole night. But this is perfect. It was going to be a blow to my ego but I’m throwing this competition.

I flash my eyebrows at Kamilla, and she smirks. “Seems like you’re in the mood to spend some money, Mr. Taylor. You’re on.”

Kamilla splits the twelve balls between us, and we both take our positions, balancing on one foot as we hold the balls between our hands. She counts down from three, and we begin the exercise.

Immediately, it's clear that losing this competition won't be hard. As soon as I lift my leg, a weight presses on my groin. But I grit my teeth, refusing to let the pain get the better of me. Meanwhile, Kamilla seems to have no trouble at all, her lithe body steady and controlled.

"Come on, Jackson, you can do better than that," she teases playfully, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "I thought you were an athlete."

"Very funny," I grumble, concentrating on steadying my balance. "Just you wait - I'll catch up to you in no time."

"Is that right?" Kamilla chuckles, clearly enjoying the friendly competition.
